What Is CBD?

CBD is an acronym for cannabidiol and is the second most common active ingredient of cannabis (marijuana). CBD is an essential part of medicinal marijuana and is derived directly from the cousin of the marijuana plant, the hemp plant. Tetrahydrocannbinol (THC) is another common active ingredient found in the cannabis plant and is psychoactive, meaning that it causes the ‘high’ effect associated with cannabis. THC use is associated with anxiety and increased heart rate, but as CBD does not contain THC it does not give the ‘high’ effect nor have these symptoms been found in CBD trials.

Is CBD Safe?

The WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD) conducted a study in November 2017. They concluded that “in humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…To date, there is no evidence of recreational use of CBD or any public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD”.

Legal History of CBD In Northern Ireland And The UK

In 1928, cannabis was declared illegal in the UK after the passing of the Dangerous Drugs Act and has continued to have an on and off relationship with the UK’s legal system. In 2001, cannabis was declared as a non-addictive substance under the Class C drugs in 2001. In 2008, cannabis was class under the Class B drugs alongside amphetamines, barbiturates and dihydrocodeine. Cannabinoids like THC are on the list of controlled substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act and so are illegal to purchase and consume.

CBD on the other hand, follows slightly different rules and is exempt from this law as hemp has a higher CBD concentration and significantly less THC compared to cannabis. CBD products are all made from hemp which is not a controlled substance and so CBD is completely legal in Northern Ireland and the UK.

What Is CBD Used For?

Extensive research highlights that CBD (if applied correctly) may benefit many ailments, alleviating the following conditions: anxiety, epilepsy & seizures, pain and sleep deprivation.

Anxiety & Sleep

Several studies have shown CBD to lower behavioural signs of anxiety. The physiological symptoms of anxiety, such as increased heart rate also improved. CBD may also benefit those with other forms of anxiety, including: social anxiety disorder (SAD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety-induced insomnia. CBD can help with PTSD symptoms, such as nightmares and replaying negative memories.

Epilepsy & Seizures

The strongest scientific evidence for CBD highlights its effectiveness in treating some of the cruellest childhood epilepsy syndromes, Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). These conditions typically do not respond to anti-seizure medications and gravely impacts quality of life. Numerous studies have concluded that CBD was able to reduce the quantity of seizures, and in some cases, altogether. The FDA have approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these conditions, Epidiolex, which contains CBD.

Pain

Numerous studies conducted between 1975 and 2018 found that CBD was effective in overall pain management without causing negative side effects. CBD is useful in several pain conditions, including: chronic back pain, cancer pain, neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia. A study conducted in 2010 found that an oral THC-CBD extract spray provided more pain relief for cancer patients than using opioids alone. CBD has also been proven to aid in pain relief and intensity in migraines and cluster headaches.
